In my final undergraduate design studio, my class travelled to Anchorage, Alaska and designed cruise port terminals for the city which currently has none. At the time of our visit, the existing industrial port was undergoing a major landfill and expansion project, planning to accept higher levels of shipping and cruise activity.
My scheme created a sentry point out on Cook Inlet. For the general public it provided a place from which to view their city back, a priveledge which is extremely rare due to the city's isolated location. For the cruise passenger, the building provided a long hello and goodbye; a place of interface where the city met the sea. This no-man's land out on the water becomes a place where both residents and foreigners can mingle together freely in their common tourist state of mind.
